Brooklyn: How Sweet It Is!

| | Comments: (2)

Last week Patch launched Park Slope Patch, a Patch site in my very own Brooklyn neighborhood. I was so excited as it has been a long time coming. I can honestly say that I’ve never appreciated my company more than now. I check out Park Slope Patch every morning to see what’s going on in my neck of the woods. It has been very helpful and super informative – I know, I know, I sound like I’m a walking marketing tool for my company, but I wouldn’t say it, or rather, blog about it, if it weren’t true. Patch really is changing the world of journalism and it’s exciting to be a part of that paradigm shift.

I’m so lucky to have stumbled upon Park Slope. It is arguably Brooklyn’s most desirable neighborhood and other than feeling safe and appreciating all the cute little shops and restaurants, I just really like the little neighborhood in a big city feel. I still live a New York City lifestyle without the intense craziness of Manhattan with all the people and constant noise. Sometimes during my 5-minute walk from the train station to my apartment in the evening, I just smile and think “I love my life.”

Here are some pics of my apartment, when we first moved in it was boring and ugly and now it's cute and homey.

The Kansas Jayhawks in New York City

| | Comments: (3)
Tuesday night was not my typical night in NYC. Instead of heading home after work, I headed to Madison Square Garden to watch the Kansas Jayhawks take on the Memphis Tigers. Yes, you read right. I got to watch my Hawks thousands of miles away from Lawrence, Kansas in one of the most famous arenas in the country! When I found out the men’s basketball team was coming to the city, I was pumped and purchased discounted tickets through the NYC Chapter of the KU Alumni Association. Not only was I excited about the game, but I was excited to expose Alex to Jayhawk Basketball! Considering you can’t find Kansas apparel in New York, I went online and ordered Alex a KU t-shirt to wear to the game. I just couldn’t have my man standing next to me at the game without representing! ;-)

After work on Tuesday, Val and I headed uptown to meet her aunt and her aunt’s friend at a bar for a pre-game drink, but as soon as we arrived at Stout, I realized I had forgotten the tickets at the office. No pre-game drinks for me. I jumped back on the train to head back to work to retrieve our tickets. I put them safely in my purse then took yet another train back to MSG. I was so mad at myself for forgetting, but wasn’t surprised at all as it is definitely something I would do, obviously. The bright side was, I still made it to the stadium in time for tip off. Katy, Val, myself AND Alex were all proudly decked out in our Jayhawk gear and we cheered them on to a victory over Memphis 81-68. It was super fun to watch the Hawks in New York City. I would definitely say my first visit to MSG was a memorable one!

One last note, it was so cute to see Alex in his Jayhawk shirt cheering for Kansas. He even texted me the next day, “Rock Chalk!” I couldn’t help but smile and laugh out loud. He is such a New Yorker and to see him jump on board the KU bandwagon just for me made me so happy! His transition into a Jayhawk is going quite nicely, before long, (perhaps after his visit to Kansas this month) he’ll be a true Jayhawk!

November came and went

| | Comments: (3)
Much like October, November was a busy month. It started out fabulous as my 23rd birthday was the first Friday in November! I got off work at 3:00pm, went to get my hair cut and styled, then headed home to find a nice surprise. Alex was at my apartment and when I walked in the door, he was walking down the hallway with a cake, candle lit, singing Happy Birthday! It was so sweet. He also gave me my birthday present, which was a brown pair of Ugg boots. I had mentioned to him once that I had fake black ones because I couldn’t justify paying full price for real ones so he took it upon himself to get me real ones for my bday. One of the things I love about Alex is that he is so thoughtful. He’s also a really good listener and will remember things that I say months after I say them. We put the ice cream cake in the fridge, got ready and then headed to dinner. It was a nice candle lit dinner at a restaurant in the trendy meatpacking district of Manhattan. Afterward we headed to the Upper West Side to meet Blake, Val, and Katy at a Latin-American club. We spent the night sipping on drinks and dancing to both American and Spanish music. Another thing I love about Alex is that he is a great dancer. He taught me a thing or two about salsa and we did our fair share at the club until the wee hours of the morning.

Saturday rolled around and the roommates and I began preparations for our Housewarming Party. Katy spent most of the day in the kitchen making tasty treats while Val and I cleaned every inch of our apartment. Woj (Katy’s friend), Katy, Blake, Val, Alex, and I enjoy drinks and conversation until our guests starting arriving around 8:00pm. Throughout the night there were about 20 people in and out of our apartment. Many guests brought wine, which was nice, and overall it was a success. Between Friday, Saturday and a nice relaxing Sunday, I had a great birthday weekend.

Monday morning came way too soon as I had to wake up at 4:00am in order to head to JFK to catch a flight to San Francisco for a work conference. After a 6-hour flight, I landed and the conference began. My long lost roomie, Jacey who just moved to San Fran, and 2 of her friends were able to join me for drinks Monday night and I met up with her again Tuesday evening after the conference ended. Before I met Jacey for dinner, I headed to Union Square to catch a Cable Car to Fisherman’s Wharf to get a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge. Unfortunately, just as I got on the Cable Car, it started raining. Due to it getting dark pretty early and with the foggy rainy ugliness, I wasn’t able to see the famous bridge very well, but it was still a nice little adventure. I jumped back on the Cable Car and headed to the Metro in order to take a train to Jacey’s new apartment. It was nice to see her new digs, but really made me realize how much I miss her in NYC. Jacey, 2 of her friends, and myself enjoyed drinks and dinner before I headed back to my hotel for a short night’s sleep as my car back to the SFO airport was at 5:00am in order to catch an early NYC flight.

The weekend after I returned from San Francisco, Val’s mom and sisters were in town so we had a full house. It was nice to catch up with the Gunn girls and as Val details in her blog - Life Through Val's Eyes - they had a nice weekend in the city.

At the beginning of November I joined the Park Slope YMCA. It is literally 1 block away from my apartment and with it getting too cold to jog outside, I had no excuse but to join and start working out more. There was a November special when I signed up – free 12 week program with a personal trainer – so of course I took advantage. I met with my personal trainer to establish goals and a work out regime that works for me and I continue the program on my own until our bi-weekly sessions at which time we up the ante. I try to hit the gym at least 3 times a week, but sometimes that’s difficult with work and the various holiday events going on. I absolutely love the holidays, but I hate the winter weight gain and I’m hoping I can avoid any permanent damage this year! The way I look at it, I already made the first step by joining a gym, now I just have to stay motivated to go, which of course is the hard part. I have the best of intentions and once I get to the gym, I’m all about it, but it’s the getting there part that I’m not too great at. I find it easy to find excuses not to go, but I’m really trying hard to catch myself in the act and overcome my, let’s just face it, laziness! I’ll keep you posted on how "Project Get Fit" goes.

November 15 would have been my Abuelo’s 80th Birthday and the first my family had to celebrate without him. The Sunday before, my family made a visit to his grave and then had a family gathering at my Abuela’s house. I obviously wasn’t able to attend, but was there in spirit as I thought about my grandfather all day. It was definitely one of those days I really wished I had Dorothy’s famous ruby red slippers so I could tap 3 times to return to Kansas to be with my family. It was a bit difficult to deal with on my own considering I am the type of person who likes to talk (imagine that) as it makes me feel better and allows me to cope easier. Instead, I spent most of Monday evening in my room thinking about all kinds of memories. I laughed to myself and cried myself to sleep that night. I woke up Tuesday morning feeling a little bit better, but it didn’t last too long. You see, every holiday season my mother and I bake several loafs of Banana Nut Bread together and share it with our family and friends. Every year, my Abuelo would hide almost an entire loaf so he could have it for himself to eat with his coffee in the mornings. It was exactly one week after his birthday that I was in my kitchen preparing this bread for a Thanksgiving potluck at work when I broke down and began sobbing on my kitchen floor. The thought of my Abuelo not being alive to enjoy my holiday bread this year was heart wrenching. I sobbed for 10 minutes, got it out of my system, and once I felt better again, I continued baking. Believe it or not, having a good cry always makes me feel better. My family and friends tend to joke that I’m overly emotional, and let’s face it, they are probably right, but one, I can’t help it and two, if it makes me feel better then why not?

My Banana Nut Bread turned out great and my co-workers enjoyed it the next day at our potluck. I left the office on Tuesday to make more Banana Nut Bread (yes, me in the kitchen 2 nights in a row, possibly a miracle), but this time for Thanksgiving Day. I didn’t have a breakdown this time, but I did get a little emotional as I thought about this wonderful tradition that I usually share with my mother. As I cracked the eggs, mashed the bananas, added the various ingredients and stirred the mixture, my mother was not only not in my kitchen, but thousands of miles away. Again, it’s times likes this I wish I had the ruby slippers. It was the very first time I made our bread on my own so you can understand my sadness.

Side Note: Mom, I love you so much and I can’t wait to come home this Christmas so we can make our Banana Nut Bread TOGETHER!

It’s never easy living in another state far away from your family, but it’s even more difficult celebrating a holiday without them. Sadly, this wasn’t my first Thanksgiving without my family. Two years ago I spent Thanksgiving in Spain, but luckily three of my uncles were visiting me that weekend so I wasn’t completely alone. I was fortunate again this year as Alex and his family adopted me for Thanksgiving. My roommate Katy went back home to Virginia, Val headed to her Grammy’s house in Boston and I stayed in the city to spend Thanksgiving with Alex. We had a huge Puerto Rican feast and spent the holiday with the 3 F’s: Family, Friends, and Football! ;-) I of course missed my family like crazy and wished I was spending Thanksgiving with them in Kansas, but spending time with Alex and his family was definitely the next best thing. We had a really nice time and throughout the day I reflected on how lucky I am and how many things I have to be thankful for.

I’m so thankful to have such a wonderful family who loves and supports me no matter what I do. I’m thankful they are all happy and healthy. I’m thankful for the most precious niece and nephews I could ever ask for. I’m thankful for wonderful friends. I’m thankful to have a good job. I’m thankful I’m happy, healthy and have been granted so many wonderful opportunities in my life. I’m thankful for an amazing, thoughtful boyfriend who cares about me so much. And among so many other things, I’m thankful to live in a place where freedom rings.

The month of November came and went so quickly, but I enjoyed every minute of it. As we head into the heart of December, I have so much to look forward to, including and most importantly, a trip back home!

Back on the Saddle

| | Comments: (3)
Ok so I am WELL aware of the fact that this blog post is more than long overdue. Since my last update was the end of September and it is now the beginning of December, I have all of October and November to update you all on. I figured the easiest way to do so without boring the hell out of you would be in pictures and brief descriptions, so here goes my lousy attempt at an October update – back on the saddle again! ;-)

I started the month off perfectly with a weekend visit to Kansas City for my nephew Carson’s Baptism. I got into town late Thursday night, which means I got to spend all day Friday with my mom and the 3 most adorable kids on the planet! Spending time with Jaxson, Audrina and Carson is one of my absolute favorite things to do. I can honestly say that even though I live thousands of miles away from them, I think about them every single day!

Baby Carson greeted Aunt Lisa with smiles!

Saturday morning the whole fam headed to watch Jaxson’s soccer game in Edwardsville. This was the first game of Jaxson’s I ever got to see since I wasn’t ever in town during Tball. It was so much fun to watch him run around and kick the soccer ball. I’m not even his mother and I was unbelievably proud of that little boy.

Saturday afternoon we headed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Carson’s Baptism. It was so nice to welcome Carson into our faith as another member of our parish. After mass and his christening, we headed to the Bonner Springs Community Center for the reception. It was nice to sit and chat with family and friends over a meal. Everyone passed around Carson like a little doll and although a little greedy, I held him every chance I got. I didn’t want to let the little guy go. When someone would come to take him from me, I wanted to say, “You live here, he’s mine right now!” But I didn’t, of course. I did get a lot of time with him and he did so well throughout the entire day of being passed around.

Saturday night we celebrated my Tio’s 40th Birthday at a Salsa Club in downtown Kansas City. There was good food, great music, and fabulous company. It was my dad’s side of the family so of course there were about 50-60 people celebrating and having fun. It was the perfect way to get an update on everyone’s lives and update them on mine. Sadly, I don’t keep in touch with everyone (can you blame me, my family is huge) so family gatherings while I’m in town work out so nicely.

Sunday my immediate family woke up and headed to the Pumpkin Patch. It was a beautiful day outside and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Jaxson, Audrina and Carson (even though he slept most of the time) having fun at Kirby Farm. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year and annual visits to the Pumpkin Patch are one of the reasons why.

Sunday after the Pumpkin Patch we headed back to Edwardsville for another one of Jaxson’s soccer games. Again, it was so fun for me to get to watch my nephew play soccer.

After the game it was time for me to head to the airport so I had to say goodbye to my family, never an easy task. The hardest part is always saying bye to the kids and every single time I do it, no matter how hard I try to fight it, I get tears in my eyes. This time was no different.

I got back to New York late Sunday night and on Monday evening, I had another visitor. Although I was tired and didn’t really have much time to adjust after my weekend trip, I was more than excited for my friend Cassie to visit. I met Cassie my sophomore year at KU as she was an exchange student from England. I was fortunate enough to get to visit her while she lived in Scotland and I was studying in Spain, but hadn’t seen her since. During her 9-day visit she did a lot of exploring on her own while I was at work and then we spent the evenings together. We also did some touristy things over the weekend that she was here, including lunch at South Street Seaport and walking over the Brooklyn Bridge.

I can’t recall if I ever mentioned that I put together a team of co-workers and joined the NYC Social Sports Club Volleyball League. If not, I just did. We played games every Wednesday night in September and October and ended up placing 8th out of 16 teams, which really isn’t bad considering some of the players had never played volleyball in their lives. I forgot how much I love volleyball considering I hadn’t played since sand volleyball over a year ago. I really enjoyed it and it was good exercise and fun spending time with co-workers outside of the office. Not to mention, having something to do every Wednesday was nice. It beats the usual going home from work to either go to the gym, read, or watch TV.

Another notable for the month of October (and again in November) was a work conference in the city. The October conference was right in the heart of NYC and the November conference was in San Francisco. Although these conferences were A LOT of work to prepare for and meant a lot of late hours at the office, they were really fun and it was enjoyable to see the execution a success.

October ended with a Sweet 16 party for Alex’s niece, Ashley and Halloween. Ashley’s Sweet 16 reminded me of my QuinceaƱera, which brought back fond memories from 8 years ago (I can’t believe it has been that long!) I didn’t really do too much for Halloween except dress up for a work party the Friday before - I was a zebra because it was easy and I already had the stuff.

As you can tell, October was a busy, but great month!
